AI under the hood—and ahead of schedule

And our top AI story of the week

Hello readers,

Welcome to the AI For All newsletter! Today, we’ll be exploring how AI is helping to enable predictive maintenance, the challenges of keeping up with AI regulation, and more!

AI under the hood—and ahead of schedule

AI is transforming how large trucking operations like Penske Truck Leasing manage fleet maintenance, replacing reactive or mileage-based upkeep with a data-driven, preventative model. By analyzing real-time performance data from its 433,000-vehicle fleet, Penske uses its proprietary Catalyst AI system to predict mechanical issues before they disrupt service.

Each truck is equipped with telematics devices that capture thousands of data points daily, Business Insider reports, tracking everything from engine temperature to fuel efficiency and braking behavior. Penske’s AI sifts through this data—over 300 million data points per day—to flag anomalies that may signal impending issues. Fleet managers receive alerts before breakdowns occur, enabling quick decisions about routing trucks for maintenance or rerouting deliveries to minimize disruption.

The broader industry shift, as Penske’s Tim Haynes notes, is toward using AI to make smarter, faster decisions at scale. With trucks becoming increasingly complex and data-rich, AI-powered platforms like Catalyst are helping companies extract actionable insights from that data—enhancing performance, reducing costs, and future-proofing their operations in a rapidly evolving logistics landscape.

📖 What We’re Reading

“Responsible AI is getting a lot of buzz. With policy conversations around the deregulation of AI, we’ve been led to believe that ethical practices are falling on enterprises, as they largely have since the inception of the technology. This, however, is wrong. The days of “AI washing” are coming to an end. And while we may see lags in federal oversight, that's not the case for state and local governments.

State lawmakers across the United States introduced nearly 700 AI-related bills in 2024, spanning 45 states. Of the bills that were introduced, 113 were ultimately enacted into law. This is a feather in the cap of true responsible, ethical AI. But it’s also a real challenge for enterprises. While piecemeal AI governance is better than nothing, it makes for a highly complex and fragmented legal environment.“
