AI in Action: Datacenters in Space

Building off terrestrial breakthroughs in generative AI and facing the mounting energy costs of Earth-based infrastructure, Starcloud has launched a high-performance LLM running on an Nvidia H100 GPU — in space. The startup’s Starcloud-1 satellite, backed by Nvidia and Google, now hosts Google’s open-source Gemma model in orbit, marking the first time a large language model has been deployed on an advanced AI chip off-Earth.

Earth’s data centers are facing serious constraints: soaring energy demands, water use, and emissions. Orbital compute offers a provocative alternative — one powered by endless solar energy, immune to weather or nightfall, and free from the resource burdens of terrestrial operations. Starcloud claims their orbital data centers could offer 10x lower energy costs while scaling up to multi-gigawatt compute clusters that would rival the largest power plants on the planet.

With direct access to telemetry and real-time satellite imagery, models like Gemma can serve as intelligent agents in orbit — spotting wildfires as they ignite, detecting maritime emergencies, or even answering questions like “Where are you right now?” with location-aware language. Starcloud has also trained a version of NanoGPT on Shakespeare from space, just to prove they could — and yes, it responds in iambic pentameter.

Risks remain, from radiation exposure to regulatory murk, but the signal is clear. As data demand grows and the edge expands upward, orbital AI may move from moonshot to mainstay.

📖 What We’re Reading

Across the Nordic region, farmers and technology companies are joining forces to make agriculture more sustainable, data driven, and efficient. Known globally for environmental stewardship and strong digital infrastructure, the Nordics are emerging as a testbed for smart farming technologies that balance productivity with responsibility.

One Nordic agri-tech team has developed an AI-powered sensor system that uses real time image analysis and IoT connectivity to identify and treat weeds only where they grow. Instead of spraying an entire field, herbicides are applied precisely to the areas that need it.
