Google and a UK-backed consortium of aviation and research groups this month launched Operation Blue Skies, the first attempt to test AI-guided contrail avoidance across an entire ocean airspace. The trial covers Shanwick, the eastern half of the North Atlantic corridor, which carries more than 1,000 flights a day between the UK and North America. Google is contributing the modeling work pro bono, alongside the UK's Department for Transport, the Met Office, air-traffic provider NATS, Imperial College London, and the University of Cambridge. Five years of prior research already tested contrail avoidance flight by flight with airlines like American Airlines. This is the jump to a whole corridor at once.
Contrails form when hot jet exhaust hits cold, humid air at cruising altitude, and under the wrong conditions they spread into thin ice clouds that trap heat radiating off the planet. Persistent, warming contrails are estimated to account for roughly a third of aviation's total climate impact — more than the fuel burned to produce them. Shanwick airspace alone drives about 5 percent of global contrail warming, concentrated in the cold, moist winter months over the North Atlantic. Unlike CO2, which lingers for centuries, a contrail's warming effect fades within a day or two, making it one of aviation's few fast-acting climate levers.
The system fuses satellite imagery, live flight data, and Met Office forecasts into a model that predicts where persistent contrails will form, then suggests altitude shifts of a few thousand feet to dodge the humid layer. Satellites check afterward whether the predicted contrail actually appeared, feeding each flight back into the next forecast. Operation Blue Skies runs across two four-month windows this winter and next, backed by a £5 million budget with the UK government covering roughly half. If the corridor-wide results hold, the partners expect the same approach to extend to other high-traffic routes.
